I have been dealing with the online world – including blogging and excluding various research / surfing hours during high school and college – for almost two years already. When I first started out my so-called online career, I focused on oDesk, online writing stints and Paid to Post forums such as myLot and MoraChat. oDesk is good and has been giving me a steady income but for the rest, it took me a while to cash out.
Anyway, that’s not the point. The point is I’ve been constantly looking for ways to earn money while still being able to take care of the kids and I came across the term affiliate marketing. So I looked it up, researched a bit and here’s what I found out.
Affiliate marketing is a process of earning something, a commission or percentage from the sales, by promoting other people’s or company’s products. Or offering an affiliate program to bloggers or website owners to others and give a percentage for every completed sale. The primary goal is to be able to find and reach out untapped markets through the help of other people.
The good thing about this is you don’t have to invest a lot of your time and effort to create a product that will sell because the products are there already. It’s about being creative and looking for ways and concrete platforms to sell it on. Then you’re happy because you earned a commission and the company is happy because new sale was made. It’s a win-win situation.
I signed up with Moms Affiliate to give it out a try. There are tons of affiliate programs which you can choose from and sign up for. Once approved, you can browse through the company and it’s up to you on how you can recommend their product to your viewers. You can also invite your fellow bloggers or advertisers to sign up and earn commission from it.
So, is it the best way to earn money online?
I’m quite not sure yet. To be honest, it can give something but the bulk of my income is still from my online job. I have yet to land the jackpot but I am still positive with this venture so fingers crossed. Nonetheless, here are some of the things I learned.
- It’s not as easy as it seems. Apparently, it’s not just about writing about a product and recommending it to your readers. It’s about fostering relationships, bringing the right people and turning traffic into completed sale so you can earn something. It’s easy to write about a product and end it with a call to patronize it. The question rests now on how to convert it into something you’ll be happy about.
- Be familiar with the product. Nothing beats genuineness and believe it or not, it can be translated or felt in how you write the post. As much as possible, be honest and write about something you’ve already used or familiar with. This way, it will be easier to share experiences and make recommendations.
- Recommend but not direct. People today are smart enough to tell if you’re merely imposing on them or giving them an alternative product. Be nice and just recommend.
- The income will come, in time. For me, it didn’t pan out fast. But hey, it takes time so be patient. There’s no such thing as overnight success both in the online world and in real life.
What do you think? Is affiliate marketing for you? Try it out and see how it goes.
